Loevestein 1, 5307 TG Poederoijen

Tip! The best way is over water

You sail on the Waal, the busiest river in Europe, while you enjoy an amazing view, the beautiful floodplains and the characteristic villages. In the distance you can see Loevestein looming on the horizon. What a way to approach the castle!

With a combination ticket (entrance ticket + boating license) you can sail between Gorinchem, Woudrichem, Loevestein and Fort Vuren every weekend in May, June and September, and every day in July and August, with both Riveer ferries and the foot ferry.

In other months, you can sail with Riveer from Gorinchem to Woudrichem. From the port in Woudrichem, it is a nice walk through the old town to the port of the foot ferry. The foot ferry then takes you to Loevestein.

You can also take the Riveer water cab from Gorinchem to Loevestein on all other days. Book the water cab in advance. You buy a separate ticket for this; the combo ticket is not valid for the water cab.

Read more about Riveer’s sailing times and departure locations here. The small foot and bicycle ferry Woudrichem sails almost year-round between Woudrichem and Loevestein.

Herd animals in the Munnikenland

In Munnikenland you can encounter herd animals like the Konik horses or the ‘Rode Geus’ Rode Geuzen and Konik horses roam freely here all year round, including on the roads and cycle paths. They can just cross the road and sometimes stand in the way. Stick to the recommended speed of 30 km/h, so you can react in time. The herd animals always have priority. Wait until the animals have moved on and do not cross the herd. Even though they look very impressive, they are not dangerous. Leave them alone, do not pet them and enjoy these beautiful animals from a distance (minimum 25 meters). Feeding is not allowed.
