Nature and the environment play a very important role in the way we manage Loevestein Castle. We’ve even implemented sustainable energy supplies as part of our Master Plan.

We built a thermal energy storage system in the fort, where an old Dutch barn once stood, and for years now, we’ve been using an eco-friendly form of heating that isn’t detrimental to the castle’s character as a listed building.

Ecologically Exciting Excursions

Sustainability is in. The environment is under tremendous strain and humankind is the biggest polluter of all. Perhaps, this is an issue you don’t want to have to worry about on a fun day out, which is exactly why we’ll worry about it for you. And on every other day of the year too!

The Loevestein Castle Museum Foundation is affiliated to Green Key. Green Key is a well-known international eco-label awarded to sustainable businesses operating in the tourism and leisure industry. The label reflects the fact that we do everything possible to minimize our business’ impact on the environment.

It means we go the extra mile and don’t merely comply with legislation and regulations. The eco-label has three levels – bronze, silver and gold. The more environmental measures taken, the higher the eco-label.

Guess what? Yes, we can proudly state that we’ve been awarded a gold-level Green Key eco-label.

In Practice

We don’t expect you to think constantly about the environment while visiting our park, which is why we’ve ensured that the measures we’ve taken are virtually undetectable, although their effect is significant. We segregate our waste, use water-saving taps and turn off lights whenever they’re not needed.

But that’s not all. We even purify our waste water and use this water for flushing toilets. Throughout the castle, we make a point of using energy-saving lamps and we encourage the use of public transport in combination with ferry services.

It’s also highly unlikely that you’ll be either too warm or too cold because we make sure the heating goes on and off at just the right times. Our catering department uses energy-efficient appliances and buys in regional, organic produce. So without even noticing, you’ll be helping to protect the environment while enjoying an unforgettable day out with your family.

It really is that simple!
