A 'Historical' Day

Loevestein Castle has a rich history spanning approximately 650 years which can be divided into three periods: the Middle Ages, the State Prison and the Dutch Waterline. The most remarkable period in the history of the castle is without doubt that during which it served as a state prison. Loevestein has become famous both nationally and internationally thanks to the imprisonment and escape of the internationally famous scholar and lawyer Hugo Grotius; it is also included in the 'Canon van Nederland' (Canon of Dutch History).
